The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) invites applications for a term Librarian position in the Geoffrey R. Weller Library. The position is open to candidates at rank I or II (Librarian I or II), depending on qualifications, with a proposed start date of July 1, 2025. Reporting to the University Librarian, and working collaboratively with Librarians and library staff, the Northern BC Archives, and the broader UNBC community, the Web and Systems Librarian joins a small team of dedicated librarians enhancing research and learning at UNBC.

The Web and Systems Librarian will oversee the UNBC Library website and systems, including the integrated library system (ILS). With support from the UNBC Web Team and Information Technology Services, this position will provide direction for the maintenance and enhancement of library technologies. This position will work closely with the UX Library Technical Assistant (UX LTA) to make user-centered improvements to library online user interfaces. With the help of the UX LTA, the Web and Systems Librarian has the opportunity to develop a centralized web presence to support graduate student research (virtual Research Commons) at UNBC.

All librarians provide reference and instruction and liaise with academic programs, providing specialized research support to students and faculty. Librarians at UNBC contribute to scholarship in their field and are encouraged to participate actively in appropriate associations, user groups and professional bodies.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Overseeing the library website, including planning, developing and implementing web content, such as the development of a virtual Research Commons.
  • Managing the integrated library system (OCLC WMS) for the library. This will include updating configuration policies, streamlining workflows, and troubleshooting issues with library staff and with the vendor as needed.
  • Initiating and collaborating on user experience for the website and other user facing online interfaces, such as the SpringShare suite (LibGuides/LibCal), UNBC’s Institutional Repository, WMS Discovery, etc.
  • Fulfilling a liaison librarian role in designated disciplines (Psychology and English) through the support of teaching, research, collection development, student appointments, graduate library research, and the provision of information literacy sessions.
  • Actively participates in the provision of reference services (face-to-face and virtual), both locally and provincially via AskAway.
  • Contributing to the collegial leadership of the library by participating in Library and University committees.
  • Other functions normally performed by professional Librarians.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree from an accredited program of library, or information sciences, or equivalent internationally accredited program. Applicants who are scheduled to complete their programs by 01 July 2025 may apply;
  • Knowledge of web software and design
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-centered service
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated team building skills and enthusiasm to work collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, independent decision-making ability, accuracy, and ability to conceptualize

Mentorship is available to the successful applicant to offer support as they become familiar with the position.

Highly Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:

  • Academic library experience is an asset
  • Familiarity with user experience methodology is an asset
  • Knowledge of any of the following: SpringShare suite (LibGuides/LibCal), Drupal, WMS and WMS Discovery.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:

  • Recent experience in providing reference and instruction services in an academic library setting
  • Proven ability to work well independently and within a team
  • Experience working with emerging technologies

Salary
The salary for this position will be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant qualifications and experience as per the UNBC Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The annual salary range for this position is expected to be from $80,740 to $99,640.
