The opportunity:
The Director of Research Security will act as a champion for and provide strategic leadership, establish institutional goals and priorities on research security, ensuring consistency with national strategy. This role is responsible for identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to meet the security objectives of the University relating to research, innovation, partnerships, and commercialization activities.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- Master's degree required (Business Administration, Political Science, Public Policy related field strongly preferred).
- PhD would be considered an asset.
- Minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience in progressively senior positions addressing, leading and advancing security within a research-intensive or post-secondary environment, government agency, or similar complex organization.
- A strong understanding of the Manitoba provincial context and the interplay between federal and provincial stakeholders in establishing research security norms and best practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the geo-political context relevant to research and innovation.
- Experience with interpretation of provincial and federal legislation and regulations.
- Experience with research methods, standards and regulatory requirements for conduct of research in Canada is preferred.
- Knowledge of university policies is preferred.
- Depth and breadth of knowledge of research funding programs, understanding of external funding and funding procedures is preferred.
- The understanding of vulnerabilities to research security is preferred.
- Experience developing and delivering training and educational material is preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Strong leadership skills required.
- Exceptional consultative, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills required.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and accurately under pressure.
- Strong communication skills to serve a diverse clientele, strong time management, organizational and interpersonal skills required.
- A high degree of tact, diplomacy, discretion, and professionalism is needed.
- High level of working knowledge and proficiency in using MS office and database are essential.
- Ability to self-direct and respond to unexpected requests for assistance required.
- Ability to handle details and to prioritize a high volume of work to meet deadlines.
- Ability to read difficult and complicated text analytically and critically, to follow and record committee discussions that may involve medical terminology, and to summarize relevant information in clear and succinct English.
- Ability to understand and apply administrative policies required.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement and action and to work collaboratively within a highly complex environment required.
- Ability to develop and maintain key internal and external partnerships required.
- Ability to adapt to changing workloads and priorities and maintain focus in a busy work environment required.
- Ability to develop and deliver workshops and presentations to the University Research community required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
